How to Set Your Profile Study Preference for Exam Scope

Use your Beer Study Buddy profile setting to keep syllabus topics, quizzes, BJCP style detail, statistics, and examples aligned with your current exam.

Your profile study preference is the app's exam-scope switch. It tells Beer Study Buddy which Cicerone® lane you are preparing for, then trims the study surface so your syllabus topics, quizzes, style browser, profile metrics, and style drills match that goal.

The setting does not change the official syllabus. It changes what the app puts in front of you first, so Certified Beer Server candidates are not buried in advanced style comparison work and Advanced Cicerone® candidates still see the extra depth they need.

Where to set the preference

Open Profile, stay on Profile Settings, choose one Study Preference option, and save it. The saved choice appears in the site header and becomes the default scope for syllabus topics, study quizzes, style browsing, style drills, and performance history.

One style across the three lanes

Helles Bock is a useful example because the same BJCP style page can stay simple for a Certified Beer Server candidate while revealing more quantitative detail and commercial-example depth for higher exam lanes.

Certified Beer Server Core sensory sections, IBU, SRM, ABV, and up to 2 commercial examples.
Certified Cicerone® The same sensory base, plus OG and up to 3 commercial examples for stronger style recall.
Advanced Cicerone® The full available vital-stat set including FG, plus up to 6 commercial examples for deeper comparison work.

Certified Beer Server Candidate

This setting focuses on the practical foundation: service, freshness, glassware, core flavor vocabulary, basic ingredients, broad beer style recognition, and guest-facing pairing language. In the app, it limits the syllabus topic list to the Certified Beer Server lane, shows the Certified Beer Server quiz lane, keeps the BJCP style surface to 40 exam-relevant styles plus 4 syllabus style topics, shows IBU, SRM, and ABV drills, and displays up to 2 commercial examples per style. A Helles Bock page emphasizes overall impression, aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, IBU, SRM, ABV, and a short example list instead of deeper production commentary.

Certified Cicerone® Candidate

This setting keeps the same service foundation but adds more style detail, troubleshooting, ingredient knowledge, off-flavor reasoning, and applied pairing expectations. In the app, it limits topics and quizzes to the Certified Cicerone® lane, expands the BJCP style surface to 70 styles plus 4 syllabus style topics, adds OG to the visible style statistics, and displays up to 3 commercial examples per style. A Helles Bock page still centers sensory recognition, but the scope expects tighter comparison, stronger quantitative recall, and more confident service reasoning.

Advanced Cicerone® Candidate

This setting is built for deeper analysis and integration across styles, ingredients, process, service, draft systems, sensory evidence, and written explanation. In the app, it limits topics and quizzes to the Advanced Cicerone® lane, expands the style surface to 100 BJCP styles plus 15 parent, Brewers Association-only, emerging, non-alcoholic, and gluten-related style topics, shows the full available vital-stat set, and displays up to 6 commercial examples per style. A Helles Bock page can expose FG and a broader example set because those details are useful for advanced-level explanation.

How the setting changes performance review

Profile performance follows the same preference. If you choose Certified Cicerone® Candidate, category rollups, syllabus section rows, style drill summaries, and recent sessions are limited to that lane. Switching to Advanced Cicerone® Candidate changes the profile view to advanced-lane work, which keeps your current exam progress from being mixed with another exam's practice history.

When to switch

Set the preference to the exam you are actively preparing for. If you passed Certified Beer Server and are starting Certified Cicerone®, switch before beginning new quizzes so attempts and profile metrics land in the new lane. You can still browse the full BJCP style list from the style scope controls when you intentionally want reference material outside your current exam scope.
