The applied workflow is observe, describe, compare, infer, and decide. Compare the beer to style expectations, freshness expectations, and service conditions. If a character can have more than one source, state the evidence: for example, buttery aroma plus slick mouthfeel suggests diacetyl, while stale paper and muted hop aroma point more toward oxidation.

Worked sensory note

A strong note about hop-derived character separates observation from inference: first name the aroma, taste, mouthfeel, intensity, and persistence; then compare the finding with style expectation and service condition. If a beer shows citrus hop aroma, firm bitterness, and a clean finish, that points differently than citrus plus stale paper and muted aroma. The professional conclusion should say whether the character is expected, borderline, or a likely fault, and what evidence supports that call.
