Mashing matters because brewing is a chain of cause and effect. Ingredient composition, process timing, temperature, oxygen exposure, pH, sanitation, and yeast performance all change what reaches the glass. Applied evaluation

When evaluating a beer, treat mash conditions as one possible source, not a guess. Link the observation to evidence: high roast plus dry finish suggests dark roasted grain; cooked-corn aroma in a pale lager may suggest DMS; sharp astringency can point to tannin extraction, water, or process issues. State what would confirm the inference and what other causes remain plausible.

Test mash conditions by tracing one sensory outcome backward. If the beer is thin, harsh, hazy, solventy, underattenuated, stale, or unusually sweet, list the plausible ingredient and process causes before choosing the most likely one. A process explanation should connect mechanism to result: temperature changes extraction or fermentation, oxygen changes yeast health or staling, and separation or packaging changes clarity, stability, and carbonation.
